생명의료정보학은 최근 급속히 발달하며 재 명명된 생명정보학(Bioinformatics)과 같은 의미로 생각할 수 있다. 굳이 구별한다면, 주로 인간과 인간의 질병 및 그 치료를 주된 연구대상으로 한다는 점 정도이다. 오래 전부터 computational biology, biocomputing 등의 다양한 명칭으로 불려오며, 컴퓨터 공학을 이용하여 생명현상을 연구하는 제 분야들을 가르켜왔다. 고전적인 분자생물학의 연구가 ‘wet bench’를 중심으로 수행되는 것에 빗대에 ‘dry lab’이라고도 불리며, 기초 생물학 연구의 중요한 새 패러다임으로 자리잡아가고 있다. 최근 인간유전체계획의 완성과 함께 미래 생명공학의 가장 중요한 분야로 주목되기 시작하면서 bioinformatics라는 용어가 급속히 대중적 공인을 얻어가고 있다. 전통적으로 bio-molecular reaction의 computational simulation, electro-physiologic circuitry의 simulation 등이 연구되어 왔고, 가장 각광을 받고 있는 유전자관련 연구 분야로는 소위 classical bioinformatics라 불리는 구조유전체학(structural genomics)과 최근 유전자칩의 발전에 기반하여 급속히 발달하는 기능성유전체학(functional genomics)이 주요한 생명정보학의 분야이다. 단백질이나 RNA 삼차구조 예측, 단백체학 (proteomics) 등도 급속히 발전해갈 전망이다.
